The project
Project and purpose
The cross-border project “Integrated waste management facilities for boosting recycling and composting in 7 Regions through cross-border activities” with the acronym WASTE RREACT of the European Territorial Cooperation Program IPA II CBC “Greece-Albania 2014-2020” aims to contribute to the achievement of key objectives of the “Europe 2020” strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, through supporting the construction of waste management infrastructure, promoting environmental protection and the sustainable use of natural resources.
In recent decades, Greece has made significant efforts to address major waste management issues and has worked towards EU policies. for the prevention, reuse and recycling of waste, but still lags behind in fully achieving national targets. On the other hand, Albania is trying to develop its basic infrastructure in order to avoid uncontrolled waste disposal.

WASTE RREACT
The WASTE RREACT project attempts to address the low recycling rate in Greece and the almost zero recycling rate in Albania through the implementation of different facilities / activities in seven (7) regions, allowing direct comparison of the impact of each measure. These actions will be further enhanced by a broad environmental awareness campaign aimed at both citizens and schools. The main interventions of the project include:
- The construction of a bio-waste composting plant with separation at the source, in the Regional Unit of Arta.
- The construction of a green point for recyclables in Kastoria and two smaller ones in Florina and Descati.
- The construction of a green spot on the island of Corfu and one on the island of Zakynthos.
- The creation of a separate collection system for recycling in schools and other key sectors in the four (4) Regions of Albania.
- The creation of a waste management monitoring platform for educational and informational purposes, as well as for monitoring waste management initiatives.
- The environmental awareness campaign that will be addressed to different groups (schools, local businesses, citizens, etc.).
